Omega takes the plunge into ceramic cases with this one and we think they’ve done it just right.
DO WE LIKE IT?
Short answer: yes. The case is probably the best finished ceramic case on the market, arguably better than offerings by Panerai and Audemars Piguet. It just seems to have a more finished feel to it with gentler beveled edges and an overall refined look. The movement is amazingly decorated as with most Omega exhibition back cases.
Ballsy move, Omega. This watch puts it right into the cross-hairs of the Rolex Daytona, Jaeger Le-Coultre Deep Sea (with a discount, not MSRP), IWC Ingenieur Ceramic, and several Panerai chronos. The Dark Side is reasonably priced, if not just slightly overpriced as with most Omega’s all of the sudden (WTF, Swatch!?!).
The problem here is that there’s just too many damn options in this price category (like the watches mentioned above) that are more iconic and emotion inducing. If you’ve done all of the above, then sure, have at it and run over to your nearest boutique and/or trusted dealer to get your hands on it. We would rather save a few bills and go with the 45th Anniversary Apollo 11.
